In 1900... the worst natural disaster in United States history occurred when a hurricane struck Galveston Texas. The hurricane unleashed 120 mph winds and a 20 foot storm surge washed over the island. Most buildings were demolished or swept away and around 3,600 houses were destroyed. Damage estimate was around $30 million. Adjusting for inflation... this would equate to around
