... Winter weather awareness week... day four... dealing with cold air
and snow...

Winter weather can pose many hazards to those who venture outdoors.
Whether it is skiing... shoveling snow... or otherwise braving the
elements... people need to exercise caution when outside in winter
weather conditions. Snow and ice covered surfaces can become
dangerous to walk on. Extremely cold air can produce dangerous wind
chills when coupled with just a little bit of wind. Exposed flesh is
always threatened during the cold winter months.

Basic safety tips include the following.

- Avoid over exertion... especially when shoveling snow. Snow can be
very heavy after significant snowfall. This is amplified in
temperatures that are closer to freezing when snow is generally
wetter.

- Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid alcohol as it
serves to dehydrate the body.

- Keep your clothes dry... especially the feet and hands. Layer your
clothing. Wear a winter cap... as most of the heat of your body is
lost through the head. Mittens are warmer than gloves... and wear
those that are tight at the wrist. Cover your face with a scarf.

- Be wary of frostbite... and seek medical attention immediately if
symptoms are present.

- During severe winter weather events... stay indoors if possible
until conditions moderate.
